Website Mission

It is the mission of this website to assist in the development of learning environments that promote Career and Technical Education as well as academic excellence. To provide examples of effective 21st century teaching and learning strategies in order to assist in the development of more engaged and motivated classrooms. To provide multimedia Podcasts and articles to facilitate an understanding of how to implement technology and multimedia in classrooms regardless of content area. To encourage independent and personalized learning by teaching students to enjoy the process of learning. To assist teachers in becoming facilitators of learning.

In the Classroom

This section highlights some of the multimedia projects and resources that are used to engage students during lessons. It also introduces readers to technology, how it can be effectively implemented, and the potential benefits that utilizing available technology resources can have on students. In addition, it describes the various educational strategies that can be implemented in the classroom in order to increase student achievement and success.

Top 6 Emerging Technologies

In her article entitled The Top 6 Emerging Technologies in K-12 Education, author Tanya Roscorla describes the technologies recently identified by the New Media Consortium that will most likely have an impact on K-12 education.

The End of Teaching As We Know It

In my experience in education (i.e., urban and rural high school teacher, adjunct professor, industry trainer, professional development provider), I have learned one thing about education. And that is, it MUST change.

Most higher education programs teach a hybrid of students, some who know and use technology and some who do not, and are taught by professors who aren’t quite sure how to truly take advantage of the tools. The students who are fluent in technology are bored and the students who aren’t are lost. These students are then thrown into schools that have varying degrees of technology integration. They are often faced with the constraints of meeting the standards, having students pass standardized tests, and trying to be relative without funding to support their efforts. However, the time has come for a dramatic change and we should embrace what is happening now.

Technology-Driven Education

With the emergence of new technology and its implementation in the classroom, the move from the traditional model of teaching to a more innovative experience is catching on across the country. A recent article by Colleen O’Dea of NJ Spotlight explores this current trend of leveraging the uses of technology as a way to actively engage students in the learning process, and simultaneously prepare them to thrive in the digital age.

What Makes a Teachable Moment?

Teachable moments often come when you least expect them. Last weekend, as I was sending an e-mail, my son asked me if I could help him. I told him to wait a minute, and in typical six year-old fashion, he decided he would count every second as he waited. Instead of getting upset or asking him to stop because it was really annoying at the time, I decided to make it a learning experience.

iPads in K-12 Classrooms

The launching of iPad devices into K-12 classrooms seems like it would be met with little resistance. After all, most students thrive on the use of technology and most educators welcome the use of devices that promise to engage their students in the curriculum. But a look at pilot programs in two California schools and one Oregon school district may shed some light on the potential limitations of this concept.

Characteristics of 21st Century Teachers

As others try to discover the next revolutionary idea to elicit changes in education, educators in the classroom are making things happen now, despite the hurdles they sometimes face. Innovative educators today are often referred to as 21st Century Teachers, and share many unique characteristics.
