Website Mission

It is the mission of this website to assist in the development of learning environments that promote Career and Technical Education as well as academic excellence. To provide examples of effective 21st century teaching and learning strategies in order to assist in the development of more engaged and motivated classrooms. To provide multimedia Podcasts and articles to facilitate an understanding of how to implement technology and multimedia in classrooms regardless of content area. To encourage independent and personalized learning by teaching students to enjoy the process of learning. To assist teachers in becoming facilitators of learning.

In the Classroom

This section highlights some of the multimedia projects and resources that are used to engage students during lessons. It also introduces readers to technology, how it can be effectively implemented, and the potential benefits that utilizing available technology resources can have on students. In addition, it describes the various educational strategies that can be implemented in the classroom in order to increase student achievement and success.

5 Questions to Ask Before Implementing Technology in Your Classroom

Implementing changes, even on a small scale, can be overwhelming, especially when those changes have the potential to affect a group of impressionable young students. As with any major decision, it is important to consider how you will introduce the change, how it will affect the current situation, and what the potential benefits are. As an educator, keeping up with current technology trends can prove to be a challenge. It can be difficult to deicide how to best utilize different forms of technology that will not only hold the students’ interests, but also improve the learning process for them while not impeding the way you want to manage your classroom. The following 5 questions have been developed to assist you in deciding how to best incorporate technology into your classroom. Following each question are brief explanations of the strategies I used to enhance the students’ use of technology in my classroom.

The First Days of School: Part 4

As the students begin to see the relevance in their learning, we have put into context how we are going to challenge them to meet the expectations. In The First Days of School: Part 3, I mentioned that I correlate their level of competency in education to their future success in the world of work. Regardless if they attend a post-secondary institution, the ultimate goal is to find a career that each student enjoys and can provide them with a self-sustaining wage. When placed in this context, the students see the relevancy of becoming knowledgeable and skilled.

Apple Education Announcement

Apple Education Announcement Yesterday, I had the pleasure of being in New York for the Apple launch of iBooks 2, iBooks Author and the new iTunes U. In the days leading up to the event, I must have read 20 articles about the speculation surrounding Apple’s Education Announcement. From what I had read, it was clear that Apple wanted to disrupt the textbook industry. I thought about the many ways a new “GarageBand for books” could possibly revolutionize education. Being an advocate for integrating technology into Career and Technical Education, I was thinking of ways in which students could work independently through a competency-based curriculum, thus creating a differentiated learning environment. This would provide the instructor the means to work one-on-one with students who need remediation. With a special needs population of over 45% at my school, I see the value in creating learning tools to further assist students in learning new material. Now that is not to say that you can’t do this with current technology, but there is something transformational about the way kids learn with an iPad (at least from my perspective of what I have witnessed in my class).

The First Days of School: Part 3

During the first few weeks of school, my goal is to get my students to openly communicate about their education. I not only engage the students in conversation about their feelings and experiences, but I also provide the students insight into my experiences. In addition, I have the students develop both a class and personal mission and belief statements. In the days ahead, the goal is to introduce the students to the various ways in which they will learn in my class. I use several basic lessons to show the students different modalities, including but not limited to, lecture-based, curated, flipped and competency-based learning.

"The How To" of Facebook and YouTube in the Classroom

The use of social media has infiltrated almost every aspect of society, from the corporate world down to private consumer use. Most recently, the field of education has begun to jump on board, with more and more educators and administrators recognizing the potential benefits of communicating through social media. Although intended to be used as an educational tool in schools, social media policies and guidelines still need to be in place in order to ensure that our students are using it for the purpose of learning. That is why in my classroom I not only encourage my students to use social media as an effective marketing tool, but I also teach them how to use it responsibly and productively by posting the right kinds of material.

The First Days of School: Part 2

As mentioned in the previous article, The First Days of School: Part 1, I mentioned that the first few days is about establishing the environment and having the students reflect about their experiences in school. In addition, I provide students personal insights into my time as a student and why I entered into education. During the next part of orientation, I believe it is important to get the students thinking about short term and long term goals. Sure, the students understand that there will be tests, homework, projects, etc. and in order to pass they will need to do well. But this conversation has nothing to do with their goals in school.
