In the Classroom

This section highlights some of the multimedia projects and resources that are used to engage students during lessons. It also introduces readers to technology, how it can be effectively implemented, and the potential benefits that utilizing available technology resources can have on students. In addition, it describes the various educational strategies that can be implemented in the classroom in order to increase student achievement and success.

Starting Early: Social Media Use in Elementary Schools

Teachers have begun to introduce social media to their students as early as first grade, providing them a safe way to use these online tools in the classroom. The natural curiosity of children, as well as their desire to use the same technology as their parents or older siblings are using, has prompted many schools to begin teaching children how to use social media in elementary school. As digital natives, children almost have to learn the latest technology in order to be successful in school and prepared for the workforce. But by introducing them to social media tools at a young age, they can be taught how to use these tools responsibly in a safe environment that is monitored and guided by their teachers and parents.

Popular Teaching Strategies

Now that the new school year is upon us, educators across the nation are preparing to welcome a new group of students into their classrooms. Those who have been teaching for a while have probably developed a teaching style that fits their unique personalities and subject matter. But regardless if you are a first year teacher or an experienced one, it never hurts to be open to suggestions on how to better manage your classroom or interact with your students. Even the most basic teaching strategies can contribute to the development of a positive classroom culture.

How Students Want to Learn

The use of digital media for learning appears to be one of the tools that students want to use in the classroom, according to a recent survey. The Speak Up Survey compiles data from thousands of teachers, students, parents and administrators in an effort to understand the educational process and how to improve it. The results of the survey indicate that students have a growing interest in social-based learning, want to connect with a network of resources, and want to be able to access a digitally-rich learning environment without restrictive rules imposed by the school districts. In addition, students also want to understand how what they are learning actually applies to the real world.

Valuable Tips for the New School Year

As the summer winds down and students head back to the classroom, it’s time for educators to think about how they can best facilitate a successful start to the new school year. As a result of collaborations conducted during Connected Educator Month, the following suggestions were identified relating to 3 themes: Place, Purpose and Parents.

4 Reasons Why Students Should Blog

Blogging can often take on a negative connotation, as the news is filled with stories about individuals using this forum to verbally attack others or to express negative feelings. But it is also a popular way for young adults to express their opinions and communicate with one another. Blogging can also be used as an educational tool, helping students learn from other students or reflect on their own educational experiences.

The First Days of School: Part 5

At the conclusion of the orientation, as described in the last four articles, there is only one last task that the students must complete. I believe that having students discuss their feelings about education and their future is important to get them to start truly thinking about what they need to accomplish. However, I think it is even more important for them to internalize these feelings and have them state their intentions in their own words. For this reason, I have the students produce a presentation about themselves, their beliefs, their mission, their interests/hobbies and their future goals.
