Bloom’s Taxonomy Apps

Bloom’s Taxonomy refers to a classification of learning objectives set by educators, and divided into three domains (cognitive, affective and psychomotor), each comprised of different levels. In other words, it is a multi-tiered model of classifying thinking, which educators use to encourage their students to develop a higher level of thinking.

When implementing iOS devices in the classroom, educators can utilize various apps to assist their students in creating, evaluating, analyzing, applying, understanding and remembering information. Use of Cell Phones in School

A recent article by Liz Dwyer has identified the possibility of a mobile education revolution.

The article states that “75% of students have a cell phone.” That fact is not going to change anytime soon. So instead of banning the use of cell phones in school buildings, why can’t students be permitted to use their mobile devices to enhance the learning process? Instead of assuming that all teenagers will at some point use their phones inappropriately to play games or bully their peers, shouldn’t we create environments of reciprocal trust in our classrooms so that our students know that type of behavior will not be tolerated?

Are Hybrid Schools the Answer?

An article by Brigid Schulte in the Harvard Education Letter discussed the latest trend in online education; namely, that a strictly virtual learning environment may not be the best way to educate our youth. Virtual schools are now incorporating services offered in school buildings that cannot be offered in a 100% online environment. In addition, more traditional schools are increasing the number of online classes offered, as a way to appeal to the students that may struggle in a purely academic classroom setting, or those who prefer a more flexible learning schedule.

According to Schulte, "...new research is finding that it (online learning) may not be the most effective way to teach children, and virtual companies have begun to see that a purely virtual approach has its limits. A key report put out by the U.S. Department of Education in September 2010 demonstrated that a blend of face-to-face instruction and online learning produced the greatest academic gains."

QR Code Scavenger Hunt

Quick Response (QR) Codes have become widely recognized as a means to transmit information. In a classroom setting, teachers can implement QR codes into various lessons in order to better engage their students. I took this idea a step further and created a timed QR code scavenger hunt that I deploy during the first few days of school.
