Five Ways to Enter the Digital Age
More important than ensuring that our students are learning grade level material, as educators we must also prepare them with necessary skills to be successful in school, work and society. Don Knezek, CEO of the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) has developed a list of 5 lessons to help move education into the digital age:
Build a bridge to the futureThe education of past generations will not adequately prepare our students for the challenges of the digital age. One way to connect students to the future is to teach them how to use social media resources effectively. It can also encourage students to become lifelong learners.
Advocate for educational value
Engage with community members and local policymakers. Speak your mind and listen to others. Follow Twitter conversations about educational policy, such as #edpolicy, #edreform, and #edtechlead.
Collaborate internationally
In order to spark a transformation in education, you have to expand your horizons. Collaborate with peers across the globe using mobile technologies.
Invest in great teachers and school leaders
In order to effectively help your students thrive in the digital age, you need to have committed, skilled, motivational school leaders. More importantly, those leaders need to be open to change and opportunities.
Go with the flow
As the digital age evolves, education will also reflect those changes. Be flexible, and receptive to the challenges it presents.
