Why Flipped Classrooms Work
A flipped classroom is a nontraditional method of instruction where students are learning material at home, and then applying and reinforcing those concepts the next day in the classroom. Some of the benefits of this type of instruction include the ability to learn topics more quickly, and the ability of the teacher to provide more individualized instruction for the students that need additional help.
Although there will always be skeptics of new and innovative teachings strategies, the majority of students, parents and teachers actually prefer this type of learning environment. Students appreciate the fact that they can watch a video at home, take notes, and if they don’t understand something, they can ask for clarification the next day in class. Parents like the idea of their children learning in a comfortable environment where they can learn at their own pace. And teachers can target their instruction to their students, focusing on those who require one-on-one instruction or need more personalized learning. This eSchool News article and video provides a look inside a flipped classroom at Lake Elmo Elementary School in Lake Elmo, Minnesota.
