Digital Textbook Challenge
On February 1, 2012, Education Secretary Arne Duncan and Federal Communications Commission chairman Julius Genachowski issued a challenge to both schools and companies to provide digital textbooks for students within five years. In a time when digital technology is becoming a major factor in society, it seems only fitting that it should also be embraced by the world of education. The implementation of digital books in the classroom is one way to ensure that students are learning in an interactive format, with the ability to be constantly updated with the most recent information.
Digital learning environments have already been established in several states across the U.S., as well as in individual schools and districts. It seems as though shifting from the traditional textbook to a mobile device that has the capacity to hold much more content is a no-brainer. Kids don’t have to carry backpacks laden with heavy books, the information available will never be outdated, and the initial purchase price of the iPad will end up being cost effective in the long run. However, are these reasons enough to justify spending the necessary funds to provide digital textbooks for every student in the next five years? What do you think? Please share your opinion below.
